A dedicated playroom for your kids has a multitude of benefits (not just for them!). It can help inspire creativity, teach independence in play, create a safe space and for us parents, an opportunity to keep the rest of the house some-what clutter free.
If you’re anything like me, I’m always on the hunt to get more out of my space. I want to maximise every square inch of my space and better yet, have a simple and effective organisation system which minimises time spent cleaning. So here are the top organization ideas for transforming your kids’ playroom into a beautiful, practical and fun play haven:
1. START WITH CLEAR ZONES
Think about your family and what’s important for you. Do your kids enjoy reading? Are they more active and therefore require activities that keep them moving? Do your kids love building and creating and therefore need more space for blocks and legos? Divide the playroom into distinct zones based on activities that excite your kids, such as:
- Reading Corner: Add a small bookshelf and a cozy kid-friendly chair or beanbag, ensuring that the space encourages your kids to come and grab a book themselves and don’t need help reaching up to grab or getting on the chair.
- Arts and Crafts: Include a sturdy table, chairs, and easy-to-clean mats.
- Building and Puzzles: Use open shelves or stackable bins to store blocks and puzzles.
- Pretend Play: Dedicate a section for dollhouses, play kitchens, or costumes.
2. INCLUDE EASY-TO-CLEAN RUGS AND MATS
Choose washable rugs or foam mats to define play zones and simplify cleaning after messy activities. These days you can get beautiful rugs that match the overall look and feel of your home whilst also doubling as a playmat. If you haven’t already, check out the Mello Mat from Neptune Blanket – it comes in some beautiful colours and design, and feels super plush.
3. USE CUBE & SLIDE OUT DRAWERS
Ikea is your best friend here. The Ikea Kallax series can be customised to fit your space and can fit a variety of storage baskets / boxes (also found at Ikea). It can be great to house bigger items like blocks or games. For smaller items like lego or cars, the Ikea Trofast unit is great as it can fit plastic boxes that easily slide out.
4. MAXIMISE WALL SPACE
Take advantage of vertical space by:
- Installing floating shelves for books and decor.
- Adding pegboards for arts and crafts tools.
- Using wall-mounted baskets for stuffed animals and small toys.
5. BASKETS ARE YOUR FRIEND
Lidded baskets are a great way to house loose items such as play fabrics and soft toys quickly and discreetly. Just throw & go is our motto!
Check out these adorable giraffe baskets – perfect for a kids playroom! The koala version is even more adorable.
6. ADD KID-FRIENDLY HOOKS
Install low hooks for kids to hang their jackets, backpacks, or costumes. It teaches them to put things away independently.
7. LABEL EVERYTHING
Add labels to all possible drawers and storage units to help kids quickly and easily identify where to find items. It also helps make clean up time significantly easier if each item has a designated home.
I absolutely love these custom labels by Pretty Little Designs – they are visual and clear, easy for even the littlest members of the crew!
8. USE A CRAFT TABLE
Miniature tables & chairs are a great wait to ensure the crafts stay in a designated area and ensure all items are within reach. We love this Ikea Flisat Table which has space to include the Trofast storage box so you can house all those little bits and bobs or even use it as a sensory tub.

9. USE A SOFT PLAY SET UP FOR HOURS OF FUN
We love a good soft play set up here – they encourage creativity and imaginative play while reducing the risk of injury and keep the kids entertained for hours on end.
10. CREATE A ROTATING TOY SYSTEM
Reduce clutter by keeping some toys in storage and rotating them monthly. This keeps kids engaged with their toys and limits the mess.
FINAL THOUGHTS
By incorporating these ideas, you’ll create a functional and beautiful playroom that both kids and parents will love. Don’t forget to involve your little ones in the process to make it a space they’re proud of and motivated to keep tidy!
Thanks for the great ideas!

Love this list! The one I’m going to start applying straight away is the toy rotation. I have a 2.5 year old toddler who gets bored very quickly.
We love a good toy rotation – my daughter ends up enjoying her toys so much more this way!
